Olivet to Calvary by John Henry Maunder

A number of people over the years have asked me to look out for a recording of ‘Olivet to Calvary’ by English Composer and Organist John Henry Maunder (1858-1920). This work is frequently performed alongside Stainer’s Crucifixion and is a popular work amongst Choirs and Choral groups. I have now tracked down copies of this CD which were released in 2008 by George Bartle (Tenor) and The Oratory Singers, Catalogue Number CLCD15707. CD Stall at Ullapool Indoor Market

On last Saturday 19th Nov, Katharine Douglas @ Caritas Music Publishing held a stall at the 2nd Annual Ullapool Indoor Market in the Village Hall. It was a most successful day, as well as being very sociable and it was lovely to meet so many regular customers, new customers and many visitors too. There was a huge variety of stalls, such as Jewellery, Harris Tweed, Home Knits, Felt, Smoked Produce, Handmade Chocolates and many more, in fact too many to mention here.

oh what a night!

Just a quick post to say what a fantastic evening we all had last night. We launched the New CD: 'Land of the Lochans' in true Ullapool style, with wine, canapes, lots of friends (some old, some new) and we all toasted the CDs' success. James Douglas gave a sneek preview of some of the tracks on the CD, as well as a wonderful performance of 'Wee Cooper of Fife.' He gave a most interesting insight into the inspiration behind the pieces and also played some music whilst guests arrived at The Macphail Centre.
Thank you so much to everyone who came along, to those who helped, to those who couldn't be there but have placed an order for a CD or two and many thanks to those who helped make the evening possible.

Composer James Douglas will launch his brand new CD: ‘Land of the Lochans’ at The Macphail Centre on Tuesday 8^th November with a Party from 7.30-9pm. ‘Land of the Lochans’ pays homage to the beauty and the majesty of the scenery of N W Scotland with music for Piano & Flute (performed by flautist George Gwilt & James Douglas, Piano). “Try it!” says James Douglas. It strikes me that people often ask if running Caritas is a full time job...well yes, it is...BUT. I also have a self catering house called Kilbrannan Holiday House in Ullapool, which is my Saturday job, if you like. I've had Kilbrannan for 8 years now (scary how time flies by) and have a good group of regular guests who come each year, plus a whole lot of other people who come for the first time. Here's a photo of my house in Braes of Ullapool, it sleeps up to 6 people and is a modern bungalow all on one level, with rather fab views over the mountains around Loch Broom.

Well, it's that time of year again, when September approaches and I produce the next Caritas Autumn / Winter brochure. This year this will include: New Releases for Sept / Oct and for some of November (more Releases may be added in future Mailshots), plus a range of ideas and titles to tempt you for Christmas too! Yes, I hear you cry: Christmas. ! Well I know many shops are already selling Christmas cards and many people are already well on their way with Christmas shopping too, so I wanted to make sure that my brochure to include as much stock as possible was well prepared too!

BBC Proms: Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela

I don’t know if you have perhaps been watching or listening to the BBC Proms series which is ongoing at the moment on BBC Radio and TV? Well last Saturday evening there was a televised Prom featuring the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela conducted by Gustavo Dudamel, and I believe that tickets for this Concert sold out in 3 hours flat (not bad for 6,000 tickets). The Concert featured a Performance of Mahler Symphony No. 2 (Resurrection) and this involved a huge Orchestra of nearly 170 performers.

Following on from this, I thought that it would be helpful to have a list of Recordings or DVDs featuring this fantastic Orchestra so that customers can order them? They are all on the Deutsche Gramophone label and a complete List will be listed on the website very soon. Many other performances from the Proms are also featured on CDs too, all available from Caritas Music Publishing, so if you are looking for a particular recording, just let me know!

NEW (25th July 2011) Eschenbach Editions are delighted to announce that 3 NEW Scores by Composer James Douglas have just been published in July 2011. The first is 'Emblems' which is a work scored for 11 Wind Instruments, in a combination of 2222 / 3. A Score is now available for sale, with parts available for Hire from Eschenbach Editions. The second work by James Douglas, is called 'Formations' and is for 11 Brass Instruments in a 3431 combination. The Composer estimates that this work would be a wonderful addition to a Brass Group. Tall Ships come to Ullapool 15th-17th July

This past weekend, we have had the Tall Ships visiting Ullapool for the first time ever. This was to mark the Centenary of Ullapool Harbour and thousands of people descended on Ullapool to catch a glimpse of a wide variety of ships, which are all taking part in the Tall Ships Race 2011. CDs by Ullapool Composer James Douglas were on sale at the event from local businesses, along with the DVD: 'A Musical Journey' which would make a lovely souvenir of a visit to NW Scotland.

Of the Tall Ships, the arrival on Friday morning of the Colombian Ship 'Gloria' was most spectacular with many people going out on a small boat to cruise around the Gloria and quite a number of Colombian sailors were also spotted enjoying some time off in Ullapool itself.
Shore Street became a huge market for the weekend and many stalls were run by local businesses and offered tempting wares for all of the local and visitors alike.

Here's hoping The Tall Ships come again to Ullapool, they were made most welcome and even the sun shone (well a little) along with some heavy showers on Saturday.

I am finding that as our industry is competing with Amazon and more and more online retailers, people do not always know how to find a piece of music. Who do you ask? Recently I have found and received orders for some of the following queries:
I heard a piece of music in Desert Island Discs some weeks ago but who was it by?
or
I am singing in a particular version of this opera and need to find a CD to learn the music from, can you help?
or
I saw this piece of music on one of these digital channels, but I don't know who sang it but the title was...

Well, I am pleased to say that I found all of these CDs and the customers all bought the subsequent CDs or ordered them from their local bookshop who ordered it from me.

'Music inspired by the melody of the land...'

This summer I am going to try to write the occasional blog about pieces of Music by Composer James , to introduce more people to his music. Kenny Mathieson in the Inverness Courier wrote: 'Music inspired by the melody of the land' to describe James Douglas' music. Not only is this quote quite humbling, it also could be quite true.

James Douglas himself says: 'I read a lot of books, see photos and paintings...and then I write music.'

Imagine always remembering a particular piece of music at a particular time in your life. Say at a wedding, a concert, a church service or even a funeral. That music and moment will always be with you for ever.

For me, I will always remember being at a Concert in St. Mary's Episcopal Cathedral, Edinburgh. I was sitting in the Choir stalls, not far from the actual organ consol and I then heard, as part of that Concert, 'A Vision' by James Douglas. The final toccata section began with a long low note on the pedals, then a higher one and then this magical sound errupted from the Organ. The hairs stood up on the back of my neck, I was entranced. I will always remember this music and where I heard it first. Magical. What about you, do you have a piece of music that always has stayed with you for some reason? I'm sure we all do, that is what is so special about Music and the affect that it has on people.

Day Trip out

On last Wed, I had a fantastic day out, courtesy of Caledonian MacBrayne and The Ferry Boat Inn, Ullapool (www.calmac.co.uk / www.ferryboat-inn.com).

A number of Landladies / Landlords from the Highlands had been invited to go and visit Lewis via CalMac via their day trip sailings, which take place during late June-end of August from Ullapool-Stornoway. As I am also employed to look after the Marketing / Advertising for The Ferry Boat Inn and Ullapool Catering (www.ullapoolcatering.co.uk), I was invited to go and what fun it was, I felt very privilidged to go and quite humbled by what was on offer in Lewis.

Cal Mac looked after us so well and it was great to see so many local craftsmen and women producing a wide range of gifts, such as scented candles, peat pictures, fantastic local photography as well as many uses of Harris Tweed including book covers, coasters, Shawls and more, not just for clothes.

I'll try and post some photos soon, as the sunset coming back on the Isle of Lewis Ferry was absolutely stunning. Thank you so much for the invite and for giving us all some wonderful photo opportunities and some cool shopping too!

Dear All, so sorry that I haven't published anything in a while, but life seems to have been v busy, which is good news. I have recently been to a number of local craft markets around N W Scotland and it is amazing how many people are so talented around our country. People are making crafts items, home baking, locally grown salads, fresh smoked fish, textile products and even some local CDs too! Let's hope people continue to support these enterprises all year round and tell as many people as they can to buy local produce, where possible or where it is available.

I am currently working on producing a Mail Order form for customers to buy all of our CDs from Caritas Records (distributed by Caritas Music Publishing). This will enable customers to print off the order form and simply return with payment to order any of our CDs or DVDs. An exclusive Mail Order discount will also apply to this Mail Order Form as an introductory offer!
